How to Make Washi Tape

Almost everyone I know is crazy over washi tape. Me too! I think they are pretty, colorful and…lets face it, they are expensive, especially if you want to have a collection of washi tape.

Also, I have been looking around for a tape that includes all the colors of my blog banner. No luck so far. I did consider using strips of solid colored washi tape that matches the banner. But then the whole thing would look chunky and I did not have much luck either finding all the colors I need.

Then I came across this DIY on making your own washi tape. Sweet! So I jumped right in and started making my own washi tape.

The only changes I made to the tutorial was that I used color pencils. Since I will be using a lot of hues, the color pencils will give me the flexibility to work in the shades and tones.  You can use inkpads like the tutorial if you have a variety of colors. I tried using sharpie paint pens but they bled into the tissue paper.

Here is what you will need:

  • White tissue paper
  • Double-sided tape (I’m using removable poster tape)
  • Scissor
  • Color pencils

Since I will be making lots of washi tape incorporating my blog colors, I cut the tissue paper to 3inches wide and 12inches long to make 3 strips. Then I started coloring. This design is an example, you can create a rainbow color pattern or trace an image on it.

When using pencil colors, it is up to you how much coverage you want. As you can see from the post picture, I varied the shading application from heavy to light so as to create texture on the translucent tissue paper.

Once you are done coloring, flip the tissue paper over and stick one side of the tape on the paper. Make sure you get any air out. Trim off any excess paper on the sides of the tape.

I created one with geometric shapes, using a ruler and mechanical pencil to guide me.

I had so much fun customizing washi tapes that I even used leftover scrapbook paper!

The color pencils were great to work with. You can use it to personalize washi tape with someone’s name or write a short sweet note on it. I mean who doesn’t like a personalized gift? The ideas are just limitless. In fact I already have some coloring ideas to work on this weekend! Go on and make your own washi tape!
